Bird baths are great for bird watching

by Mike Fisher

There are many great things that can liven up the backyard, and some love to have things just to draw in birds. My mother has a large collection of bird feeders, and special feeders made just for hummingbirds. She loves them, and they do tend to draw a larger number of birds to her yard so that she can enjoy them while they are there. She can sit in her windows for hours and watch them on some days, but she usually does not have the time. One thing she talks about wanting is some new bird baths.

She never asked for bird baths, but I guess she has decided it is time to get some. She said she wants some for the front and the back of the house. I always thought that these were something that were only for decoration, but she tells me that the birds really do get into them. I have a funny vision of the birds flying down with a towel and scrub brush to have some bath time in the bird baths. I know that is not what happens of course, but it certainly is an amusing visual.

Bird baths have been around for a long time, and they do have a hefty price tag on them in many cases. This is because of how they are made and what they are made of when they are made right. My dad was given one as a gift, but it was made out of plastic. It was very light weight, but there was a weight in the bottom that was put there to hold it down. It didn’t work. He didn’t think it would, but because it was a gift, he gave it a go. He has since then given up on bird baths.

You can find these in places that have other garden and outdoor supplies. The good bird baths are rather heavy, and are probably much heavier than they look upon inspection. If you want to go get one but you aren’t sure you can lift it, make sure you take someone with you, or have a dolly to move it around. Most stores will help you get bird baths to your car, but they won’t be able to help you once you get home. They certainly are worth the price if you can afford them, even if the birds pass them up. Just make sure the water does not become a haven for mosquitoes.
