Interior design jobs are a creative rewarding career

By Jill Stone

Although there are a lot of jobs for interior designers, they have less to do with your degree than with the connection that you have. I learned this the hard way. When I first became interested in jobs in residential interior design, I did what any hard-working kid from a family in Chicago would have done, I studied my butt off. Granted, an interior design job was not the traditional career path in my family. My parents both looked at me sideways when I announced my intention to look for jobs in interior design. They wanted me to be a professional or an artist. I didn't have to make a lot of money, but I did have to do something with an intellectual bent to it. In their minds, interior design jobs did not fit the bill.

Nonetheless, when my parents saw that they could not talk me out of an interior design career, they became supportive. It turns out there is a lot more to interior design jobs than they had thought. An interior design job does not just involve decoration, it involves designing a space from scratch using my creative capabilities to make it more useful for people to live and work in.

I went to one of the best interior design schools in the country, and got great grades. Nevertheless, I was so busy studying that I did not make the connections that would be so important for interior design employment. If you want to get an interior design job, you had better get to know a few architects, a promoter or two, and some icons of the art design world. Basically, there are a lot of different kinds of contacts that help you with interior design jobs, but you must have contacts.

Because I did not make contacts, I was limited in the interior design jobs that I could take. There were some entry level jobs open but none of them seemed very interesting. Nevertheless, I knew that I had to work. I immediately applied, and I got an interior design job at a large firm. It was not very interesting work – mostly we worked to redesign factories. Nevertheless, I was more wise about making contacts this time. In my interior design job, I met a lot of people who could help me advance my career. Now that I'm looking for other interior design jobs and thinking about quitting my current one, these contacts are proving invaluable.

Regardless of your artistic ability and an eye for appealing layouts, a job is generally a slow climb up a ladder throughcompetitive ranks. Searching online will give you a lot of information on what kinds of available positions there are out there. Take a look online at the interior design job opportunities classifieds to see if there are any job listings by a company with searchable databases like monster.

The average annual wage for interior design jobs nationally is about $48,000 well above the national average overall. Design work is even more lucrative in California, with an annual average salary of $55,000. Education, training and contacts help get you what you want in a job placement career

Understanding of all the aspects of design projects, project expenses, and specifications, and construction documents. Interior decorators can be trained in different places. To get to this point will take several years of school and knowledge in areas of interior design such as fabrics, color coordination, computers for CAD programs as well as the ability to put everything together. I have a good friend who went through interior design school and thought she would immediately become a top designer making a fantastic salary. Well, she didn't and what she soon found out was that she had to take on a an entry level interior design job instead. Keep in mind that interior designers may also work with many different people in various fields. Some of these jobs may even require the designer to select the contractors to do the work. This means that another important aspect of a professional interior designer and decorator is to be able to properly budget a job and stay within that budget. As you can see, interior design work is so much more than just decorating a room and making some additional space. But, once you have the qualifications you will be able to get just about any type of job you want. It takes a good education, plenty of hands on experience in the field and it takes the right contacts in the industry.

There you were, sound asleep in your bed. The house is completely dark, and the night is still. Just another sleep break before that morning sun rises and sends you back to the office. Then it happens. You hear the front doorknob rattle furiously. You immediately perk-up in your bed. You were awoken because this is not an okay, run-of-the-mill sound. It's an odd noise that triggered your brain, letting it know that something is wrong. You spring from the bed, and dash to the door. As you reach it, it creeps open. Now you're standing face-to-face with a criminal. God knows what his intentions are.
