After a long harsh winter I look forward to getting out in my yard and start sprucing things up in spring. Whether I am adding a new pond and fountain or swing set accessories to my daughter's playground, weeding the garden, or this year I need to build myself a new storage shed in my back yard, or getting out on my bike, I love the chance to get out in the warm sunny weather and enjoy the weather while is lasts. After being cooped up all winter, thank god for hockey on TV, who wouldn't want to get outside on a nice day. Nonetheless, this year I had an very ambitious idea. We needed a new backyard swing set for my six year old daughter. Apparently, the swing set backyard had finally looked old and tired after too many winters. The old big backyard swing set looked like it would collapse and it was time to go.
Big backyard swing sets are relatively simple to build these days. Today's swing sets come in many different forms. I find that the heavy duty plastic or resin ones are a consideration, while there are others made out of cedar, or others that are styled differently and offer everything from slides, to climbing walls and built in houses for kids to play in. Gone are the days of the old steel swing sets I had as a kid growing up. Todays play structures for kids are easier to build and don't rust with all the outdoor elements because they have a new process called powder coating that resists rust. As long as the swing set chain is installed properly and the unit is placed on solid ground the structure will remain sturdy for years to come.
I built my swing set backyard myself as a kit that included the swing set, a slide along with some monkey bars, and a house at the bottom for my daughter to play in. I also bought a 3 person swing for my wife and myself. The swing set is made out of powder coated steel A frame and will not rust outdoors, and comes with an awning on top to keep the sun off. Now we can all enjoy the great outdoors while my daughter is on her swing, my wife and I can use ours as well. It's great fun to sit in the back yard on a nice spring or summer day and relax on our swing sets as we look at my newly installed backyard fountain.
There are lots of places that sell swing sets including your local hardware store or home improvement store or you can look for websites offering used equipment online. A way to save money on buying a swing set for your kids is to be on the lookout for garage sales in your neighbourhood or you may want to consider making your own set out of cedar or rope and use a tree in the yard or you may be able to find a plan or kit online at a website that has do it yourself kits for the home handyman.
