Who could resist a beautiful upholstered chair

by Mike Fisher

Although I have always loved upholstered chairs, they have never really seemed to like me very much. As a matter of fact, up until recently I have had no nothing but bad luck with upholstered furniture. The first upholstered chair I ever owned was in college. I was walking down the street when I saw it out in front of someone's house.

It wasn't unusual to find furniture lying out front at that time of the year. Students were always moving out and getting rid of things in the spring, so finding an upholstered armchair in front of a rental house wasn't unexpected. Nevertheless, it was an unusually nice chair. I was pretty surprised by it actually. It was a big upholstered leather chair, a recliner made for comfort and luxury. Although the foot rest was broken, everything else seemed all right about it. I felt pretty luck to have been the first person to find it.

Soon after we brought the upholstered chair home, however, we discovered that not all was as it seemed. The first time I sat in that chair, I was in heaven. It was extremely comfortable at first, but then something strange happened. I started to itch. I didn't think about it at that moment, but soon I was itching all the time and my other house mates started to complain. The upholstered chair had actually been infested by fleas! They spread through the entire house, and it took us months to disinfect. My housemates, needless to say, were quite unhappy with me.

With the other upholstered furniture I got, it has been much the same thing. I was foolish enough to invest in a nice upholstered couch for my house, but one of my house mates quickly ruined that. To this day I don't know who let it in, but someone left the door open and a wandering neighborhood cat came in and peed on the couch the second day I had it! No one bothered to clean it up, and by the time I found out, it was too late. The smell was already in the couch and it was practically ruined.

About a month ago, I tried to give upholstered furniture one more chance. There was a beautiful upholstered chair on sale at the local furniture store, and I really couldn't resist it – it looked so comfortable. To this day, nothing bad has happened to it, but I'm still keeping my fingers crossed.
